You’re My Heart’s Inspiration

(Or something like that.)

Inspired by you guys, I’ve started a series of posts on Cooking Basics over at my column, The Prudent Pantry.

Every week–or some other random frequency–I will write about some kitchen basic. I’ve listed a bunch of them, and I’m taking suggestions over there as well. Chime in, won’t you?

And if you’re local and want me to come over and show you how to cook, I can do that too. But since writing about it requires way less planning, I’m doing that first.

    My suggestions:
    Oven-roast vegetables
    Put together a marinade or seasoning mix for meat
    Something on the basics of grilling

    You should also do a post about how to follow a recipe and about how to pick out fruits and vegetables, and perhaps a list of basic cooking utensils and supplies.

    Along those lines – basic vocabulary of cooking. When I first started cooking for myself, I wasn’t sure what sautee, broil, braise, etc. meant.

    How to cook fish seems to be a big problem for many people.

    Basic stew? Chili?

    How to brown meat? (For years, I’d put in too much and it would sort of steam and go gray.)

    Basic steamed veggies?

    I agree with Amanda about a post on how to choose ripe veggies and fruits with the add-in of checking eggs in the carton to make sure you’re not getting a dozen cracked ones.

    Two more breakfast items you could maybe add: French toast and pancakes?
