Too many things suck this week. So I am shoe-shopping. And it isn’t ‘window’ shopping or fiscal irresponsibility — I won a gift certificate! I know just what I want, too: a chunky black oxford. Like this:

(screencap courtesy of this site, but not hotlinked!)

I put out the call to Twitter and my sister and got lots of suggestions. And of course I opened one million tabs in my browser with shoes that I like. Only a few of which are actually oxfords because apparently no one makes chunky shoes right now. I JUST WANT IT TO BE 1998 IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK.

This is the current leading shoe:

Good old Doctor Marten! But they don’t have it in my size (7 US, 5 UK, 38 Europe — and yes I know that 37 is supposed to be size 7 but they pinch my toes and I do better with 38 which is about 7.5). So I can wait, or I can choose another shoe.

Dansko has a couple options:

I love the first one (and yes I know that isn’t black), but it’s not exactly what I had in mind. The second one looks like I should be wearing a suit. Which has its own appeal…

Here’s a fun one that is nothing like what I had in mind:

I could wear them for Wii Bowling!

These loafers are calling my name. Do I want loafers? Maybe I want loafers. Or is that a clog?

Or maybe I just need another Mary-Jane. Is that crazy? I already have these:

But these are all so pretty:

Ooh, and I found an alternate style of Doctor Martens:

They even come in my size! But I am still totally undecided, so please tell me what you think I should do.

I would say either wait for the first Docs to come in your size, or go for the black Mary-Janes on the bottom right.

I LOVE chunky oxfords! I also want it to be 1998 or around there, good music (i’m a child of grunge), great shoes!

I also love the chunky oxfords – and that youtube video! That’s the 2nd time in as many days that I’ve heard someone making fun of that Paul McCartney/Michael Jackson “Ebony & Ivory” song – coincidence? I think not :)

I vote, of course, for the Doc Martens.

… And if they don’t work out for any reason, I vote for you sending them to me. … Just in case.

Oh man, those Fleuvogs are KILLING me. Alas, the gift certificate is for OnlineShoes.com, which doesn’t carry them.

I don’t mind heavy(ish) shoes. I’ve had Docs before (but not for HALF OF MY LIFE OMG HOW DID I GET THIS OLD) and I remember the irritating part being breaking them in.

It never occurred to me that Fleuvogs made anything but awesome knee high boots! (I own two pairs of Angels)

I love the second Danskos (the black) and could see them being totally cute with a skirt. If I were you, I’d wait on the Docs – the ones Amelie is wearing are awesome (I should know – I wore them for years! ;)), but the models that OnlineShoes carries are chunkier and less versatile.

I gotta say I love the Docs and yes, they take forever to break in and I was going to say how it’s all worth it and such before I thought more about the ease of the loafer/clog, especially that link in your comment you just put up. And um, the fact that you can slide them on and go is very appealing to me. But man, now I want some Docx. I miss my Docs. I really miss clunky shoes.

Gwen, do you know what model the Amelie shoes are?

p.s. There’s also a 1461 without yellow stitching, which may be even more accurate.

p.p.s. OnlineShoes has the 1461, both with and without the yellow!

Wait for the Docs…all the shoes are pretty (and I’m partial to Danskos myself) but the Docs are the best and closest to what you’re looking for!

I really like the 9369; that’s my vote. Although I really like those blue Keens, too.

Hahaha, Doctor Martin’s boots. The Young Ones are awesome. I need to get my dvds back from my brother. Long live Cliff Richards!

Okay, shoes: I like the blue ones in the set of six near the bottom.

Dr. Marten, always. I have a pair of Danskos (in a style that they don’t make anymore) but they just aren’t the same and take just as long to break in, which it why I haven’t gotten new shoes yet. They are finally comfortable.

Aw, that’s a shame they don’t stock Vogs. In that case, I vote for the Docs. The last ones you posted are just super. And they don’t have too many eyelets, so you *probably* won’t get rolled for them by some skinhead.

Wow, I was just coming here to comment and post links to some Fluevog shoes so you could get some and I could live vicariousy through you………and look, some other cool person with wonderful taste beat me to it!

Too bad your gift cert won’t cover them. Phooey.

I want these: http://www.fluevog.com/code/?p=73&pp=9&view=detail&colourID=2225 to wear w/ a cute summer dress.

    I know, I’m no help.

I JUST WANT IT TO BE 1998 IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK made me laugh out loud! Glad you’re enjoying the shoe shopping, despite the lack of chunky options :)

I remember reading an article about the wardrobe in Amelie way back when it first came out. The shoes are definitely Docs, but I don’t think they’re the 1461 – the toes seem rounder. Some time ago I met a woman who was wearing “Amelie shoes” and she told me they were Docs bought in London. So, I’m wondering if across the pond (and then across the Channel) they have access to styles that we don’t have here? I wish I’d saved that darned article.

Anyway, if you find out for sure let me know because I have wanted Amelie shoes forever!

I’m almost certain I’m going to order the Chanda Docs (http://www.onlineshoes.com/productpage.asp?gen=w&pcid=117274). They are not exactly like Amelie’s but I really like the padding at the heel and they are very handsome. I’m going to hold off and see if I can find a local source (any suggestions, anyone?) to try them on first.

I just realized that in 98 big chunky platforms were in. I should have said 1994.
