Hair Today…

I need a haircut. I don’t want to admit just how long it’s been, but it’s a long time. Sam already existed, but was very small.

Now I have this gift card for a hair place. Actually, I’ve had it since my birthday. But I have a problem: I have NO IDEA what to have done. Until recently I was absolutely certain: short, layered bob and dye it red. Now? Well, now my pesky hair has gotten to the length where I’m all, “ooh, I look pretty with long hair.” Also I remembered that I look pretty with dark hair. Ack.

This is what I look like right now-ish:

As a bonus, that is the sweater I am currently trying to finish. I started it, oh, a year ago. Last night at knitting Ellen asked if I could just make it a cropped sweater. Which is a great idea except then I will look like I forgot to make the rest of it. Trust me.

Anyway, the hair. As you can see, it is looking pretty nice. So one option would be to just get it trimmed and some long layers put in to bring out the curl. This is possibly the best option, but it is admittedly very BORING.

On the other hand, I could do the bob.

I scoured the internet and found several photographs of celebrities with approximately the cut I would ask for (L-R is Audrey Tautou as Amelie, Colleen Moore, and Katie Holmes):

I would not mind looking like any of those ladies. However, I have already done that cut. You may remember it from my entire pregnancy. A sample:

I was awfully cute, but I did have pregnancy glow going for me. Also, I’d spent 20 minutes on my appearance in that particular picture, something I have not once done since.

So maybe I should keep it long. Like this:

The hair, folks. THE HAIR. But if a haircut could make my ass look like that, YOU KNOW I WOULD DO IT.

So, the options are:

  1. Keep it long.
  2. Get a bob.

Then there is the issue of color. I could just make the brown richer, with a little bit of red (which is already present, so I’d really just be magnifying the existing color). This would be very pretty and not at all daring. I could go for an unnatural shade of red, which would be fun. Or I could have my hair dyed a natural-ish shade of red , somewhere between my natural color and Sam’s.

(I have no idea who that is. I found the photo ages ago and saved it without proper attribution.) (Her haircut is actually pretty spectacular, but I am pretty sure that on me it would be a mullet.)

So my color options are:

  1. chocolate-y cinnamon-y brown
  2. fire engine red
  3. copper red

Or, as a final option for both cut and color, I could follow Yojo’s advice and go asymmetrical:

What say you, Internets?

I say my beard was totally out of control and badass back then. I miss it.

I also am torn. I’ve always liked short hair on a chica, espcially a dye-job/crop on a milfy chica… but you DO look really good with long hair right now. So, as I said: torn.

I love you with a bob – I would go for a warmer base, like the cinnamon brown, with high contrast highlights.

But you look super fine right now… the layers to bring out the curl would be good, too. I am not a fan of all over color anymore – too hard to keep up, so I would still opt for color chunks, maybe some peek-a-boo color in copper?

I’m going to bring up the less fun, more practical considerations. I know, I know, buzzkill.

Are you planning on going a long time without a haircut after you get this done? If you are, you’ll want something that will grow out and not look terrible while doing so. This is easiest with long hair, but can be done with short if your stylist knows that’s what you’re going for. Same consideration with color. You’ll want either a color that will fade gradually, or one that will blend with your natural color. Unless you don’t mind your roots showing as they grow out – in that case, go with copper, I like that one.

Lastly, you already know more than I do when I go to the stylist. Give him/her your pictures, say wash and wear is important to you, and they’ll make suggestions based on your hair.

That’s a tough one. I know for myself I always feel better with short hair, but I also know it’s hard to grow it out (read: impossible) and you can always go shorter later. Your long hair is pretty and makes you look sort of Preraphaelite. I think I lean toward–keep it long. You could go for the Isabella Rossellini woman of mystery look. But if you do keep it long, I definitely vote for a fun color. That will help you feel less like you have “boring” hair.

Since you aren’t set on short hair, I think you should keep it long for a while. It’s easy to go from long to short whenever you’re ready, but it’s impossible to do the oppposite. So, I vote for your boring option with some color as per Katherine’s suggestion!

I like it long with some layers (not a lot). This will bring out the curlies. And for color, although I DID suggest the warmer brown last night, I’m kind of leaning toward copper now.

    1) chocolate-y cinnamon-y brown
    2) Like Katie Holmes

    All really cute ideas though.

Do you currently have a short fringe, or is your hair back in that current photo of you?

I am always in favor of shorter and more color, because it makes for more dramatic before/after photos. But I reluctantly admit that your hair DOES look pretty terrific right now. So I vote for leaving it longer but getting it trimmed a bit (the boring option) and then doing chocolately-cinnamony brown (again, the most boring). Then, when you get tired of it, that will be the perfect time to go shorter and go for a more dramatic color.

Yes, I have a short fringe/bangs. My hair grows fast, though, so feel free to suggest styles with longer bangs. I look way better with than without, however.

I’m rocking the bob right now and while I totally love it, I can’t get away with not doing anything in the morning because my natural waves kill the look (at least, on me). But if I were you with the length you’ve got going now, I’d do a big time angled bob. Best of long and short!

I am having this debate with myself at the moment. I ususally keep freakishly unnatural red, but due to pregancy and now toddlerdom taking all my time and energy it has reverted back to red/brown natural color and is past my shoulders. I want to go back to crazy red.

ANd don’t stress too much- pretty people can do whatever they want with their hair!

I like long, but I vote for you leaving it down more often. Or at least, more often when I see you. I love the bobbed look, but it might require too much maintenance. I second the vote for warm base and high-contrast highlights, unless your gift card won’t cover that, in which case I vote for cinnamon-y brown (because of the color-growing-out-later issues – otherwise I’d say go copper).

You already know I love the little bangs. I think it looks pretty great right now – so, keep the length and play with color instead?

I’ve found that my best haircuts have been the ones when I went to the stylist and said “I have no idea what I want. Please, just *do* something!”

Assymmetrical requires upkeep, and if you’re like me (haircut once a year!) it’s just not worth it.

Maybe keep the length but give yourself some face-framing layers in front, and cut off the dead ends? I’d stay away from fire-engine red (I’ve done it, it’s fab!) but again:upkeep. Copper red and chocolate brown will be easier to maintain because both of those colors will stick for longer, and your roots won’t be so obvious.

My response is entirely torn between “Have hair that’s exactly like my hair! My hair is the best!” and “Have the kind of hair I sometimes want to have but am too scared to commit to!”

Also, I just realized that your hair is currently about the same length as mine was when I was freaking out that I was “bald”.

I vote for longer, or maybe in the middle, more katie holmes length, or the link yojo posted above, or just a smidge longer, with some layers perhaps to bring out the curlybits, and definitely coppery-red.

I always THINK i want short hair, and then cut it, and then lament how awkward it looks growing out (because i am far to lazy (and cheap) to get a haircut with any frequency. (Read, I have been to a salon for a haircut exactly 2 times in the last 3 years, have cut it myself or let it grow all of the rest of the time.)

BUT. whatever you decide to do, you will look fabulous!

My mom always swore that short hair was a necessity when wrangling two toddlers: she did not have to worry or care about her hair. She grow it long when I started going to school which I always liked, bu after the ease of short hair she went back to short cuts and has not returned.

Personally, I have to say go with Betty Page, cause, um you know, distracted by nudity. : )

I vote for 1 & 1 (that would be long & cinnamony brown). But those bobs are very enticing & I’m sure whatever you get will look simply smashing. And if you end up going Cyndi Lauper – then we can sing 80s tunes whilst we knit ;-).

Here’s another picture of Audrey with a cut that might look really good on you:

My next-door neighbor has this kinda pixie cut, and she loves it, because she doesn’t have to do anything with it.

    August 23, 2008 at 11:02am

I adore pixie cuts. I look marvelous with a pixie cut. And I end up hating it every time I get one because my hair grows so flipping fast that I’d have to get it cut once a month to maintain it. So, alas, no pixie cut for me.

  29. Nell

    August 23, 2008 at 11:33am

Hmm, this is a tough one. I got my hair cut before I moved and it ended up shorter than I wanted, but now is growing out too fast, so I might not be the best person to ask.

But here’s my advice, since you’re kind of happy that your hair is longish and dark right now, go with that. Trim it, play with the layers, make it (or keep it) a beautiful chocolately brown. Then if you want to go short later you still can. I’m all about keeping options open at the moment, and besides, how much does it suck when you get a hair cut and then wish you had long hair again?

Good luck, you’ll look super cute no matter what you decide.

I think you look really nice with a bob. Something a bit choppy, though, not totally super-sleek. Maybe a slightly longer fringe (bangs)? That photo of you pregnant is lovely.

Oh, in addition, if you had the money and time, you could really play around with your style and cut every few months. How exciting!

But I suspect the money / time thing may hinder you.

Okay, I’m little later than most in replying so hopefully, I’m not to late.

I vote for keeping it long. I love pixie cuts too but even though that’s what I’m sporting now, I really, really wish I could let it grow long again as it looks good long too. The problem is the GROWING OUT stage, where you have to spend all kinds of time on it for it to look halfway decent. I can’t tell you how much I regret getting my hair cut 2 1/2 years ago after it finally got past my shoulders (it was actually about the length yours is now). Every time I try to grow it out I get sick of the time I have to spend on it and get it chopped again.

As for color, I can’t really help you, other than to say, whatever you go with would be a lot easier to fix if you end up not liking it as opposed to cutting and then regretting.
